At the Grocers Picnic Upholds Saloons and Vice Slanders Religion and the Ministry Makes an ass of tllmself. At the grocers picnic in Atchison Wednesday, the peerless John J.

sounded the death note to the last glimmering chance he ever had to be returned to the United States Senate. Ingalls upheld lawlessness as against the direct vote and expressed wish of the people of the state of Kansas; called ministers slanderers, and unfit to be noticed by the civilized world, upbraided religion and its followers, and all because a lew Atchison ministers tried to suppress sin, the saloons and have the laws of Kansas enforced and respected. Is not that a pretty spectacle for an avowed candidate for the United States Senate to place himself in before the people to whom he looks for suffrage. He skinned religion and law much as he used to tan the southern democrats, but believe he has ponnced upon the wrong subject No gnat reform ever took a Nearly nine hundred WCKETS issued. John B. Kurth. Prairie view Penclllnas. Mercury dancing about the 100 mark the first of the week. Threshing is in full play now the oats yielding about 20 bushels per acre.

G. W.Moutray is making preparations to go to the strip the first of August. Elder J. F. Sloan filled his usual appointment at the Pleasant Grove church last' Sunday morning and evening.

J. P. Watson thinks the Effingham people have struck "bed rock" as they have put the poor people on regular rations. D. L.

Batchelor and family of Osage City spent a few days rusticating in the country. They had just returned from a three weeks outing in Colorado. Mrs. Munger of Effingham has been spending a few days at her father's residence in the country and attended church at Pleasant Grove Snuday. Hon.

A. J. Rice is having his new farm broken out near Ilollister. The price he pays reminds us of the callow youth who walked "two miles to get a horse to ride a mile." The scenic show at Effingham was quite well attended from hereabouts. It is quite amusing to see the wonderful attraction a little cheap music, some very stale old jokes and a little "onery" kicking has for the average citizen from the "Rooral deestricts." We are reliably informed that the difficulty between our Sugar Bowl friends has been settled by the party appearing, pleading guilty, and paying a nominal tine and costs.

The matter had been quite far reaching in its influence and it is to be sincerely hoped by the mutual friends that this may bo the last of any and all such troubles. The Rebekah lodge at their last regular meeting elected the following officers for the ensuing year: Noble Grand, Miss Stella Cohoon; Vice Grand, Miss Mamie Bennett; Sec'y, Geo. Hilton; Luther Stewart; Per Sec'y, Wm. McMullen. Miss Harmie Sowles was elected as delegate to the state assembly and Mrs.

Stetler as alternate. This lodge is now in a prosperous con dition. Five new candidates will be initiated next Thursday evening. A supper and entertainment will also be given. D.

G. Wilson reports some wheat that was accidently dropped on the ground around a grain house, as having grown and developed into good wheat. This last spring and summer would have been excellent for spring wheat in this section. which is seldom the ease. Earth for only $35.

at everybody determined this week we had in dozen chairs to select We have ordered a new is Tho Champion, says C. E. Green will soon announce himself as A candidate for sheriff. We hardly think it possible. In a tour of the town Wednesday not a man did wo find to whom he had spoken to regarding the matter, and we believe he would advise with his friends here if ho was a candidate, and without doubt could secure the Effingham and Prairie View delegates without a struggle, ne would make a competent officer, however.

Since the above was set in type Mr. Green was seen, and says ho is a candidate and is in the race to win, and expects our home delegation, and without a question is entitled to it. Four years ago ho was a candidate and came within a few votes of the nomination as against Sheriff Larkin, and he feels ho is entitled to it this year. Mr. Green had not made up his mind to run until Monday of this week.

A. J. Bice has teams to work subsoiling ranch of his land. A gang plow is used. A furrow the usbal depth is plowed, when the snbsoiler follows in the same placo tearing the earth loose some teij or twelve inches deeper.

Mr. Rico claims if the hot winds do not come in this section, by subsoiling good crops can be raised without rainB. lie is getting his land in shape for future dry spells. We firmly believe the devil has charge ot the weather, rains and storms, hot and dry and has had ever since olden times when the elements were placed in his hands as recorded in thi bible. This weather has a tende icy to make a man cuss, and thus erve him.

C. B. Crandall, dentipt, will be at Dr. Moore's offico every Tuesday. When you reed anything ia his line call and sea him.

Givo us the news. step backward. In the course of his remarks he asked any man or woman in the vast audience who felt the danger of assault to body or virtue within Atchison to raise up. lie stated Atchison was one of the best governed cities in the United States. A lady arotee and was about to take is sue with him on this point when he stated he could discuss nothing with a woman.

Again she tried to be heard, but without avail. Ingalls has placed himself on record as against the statute law of his state, against its enforcement. This is the position of an forever ex-senator, an attorney, a supposedly brilliant man. Such talks, such utterances as his, is what brings forth enmity between man and man, and eggs on to desperation opposing forces in a prohibition quarrel. The gauntlet has been opened, and every tax payer, every man who respects religion and law should turn the dogs of war loose.

until such lawless utterances, and promulgators of them, are struck to the dust with the disgrace due to them. General Guthrie followed Ingalls A learned attorney, a judge, who said law in a state, as expressed by the people should reign supreme The people, not a city or township settles what is good for the whole He had voted to Bubmit this propo sition, and every legislature since he had been in its favor. If you want to do away with a bad law re peal it. The General made a hit with the country folks of his own county. The very men who have chanted Ingalls' lame and name, all around here, came home disgusted, and will fight him from now on in any political aspiration.

He died by the use of his own mouth. It was a fatal mistake. Lafayette Hawk has just completed a new barn. Grandpa Sheets has been quite sick for some days. One of our nicest young men is on the list, but is awfully quiet about it.

The mercury reached 104 in the shade Tuesday. Some young ilks from Effingham had a picnic in the park Wednesday. Threshing machines are being mo ved out and made ready for work. Elonzo Berry and Blanche Jinkis wero united in marriage Sunday morning by Rev. D.

E. Bundy. We extend to them our most cordial congratulations, and all will unite in wishing them happiness and prosperity. The camp meeting will continue over next Sunday. Largo audiences attend the services each evening and remarkably good attention is given.

It has been estimated that there were over a thousand people at church Sunday and there was almost perfect order during each service. The meeting has already been the best that has ever been held at Arrington, and yet the evangelist insists that the best time is coining. Do not miss the sermon next Sunday on the subject "Fixedness of Purpose." A thief who gave the name of Ostrander stole a team of horses, set of harness and wagon, near Shannon hill, and then proceeded to load up with hogs, five of them, which he had taken to the stock yards and sold for $47.90, receiving a check on Exchange National Bank for pay. When he presented it he was promptly arrested, as the Atchison county Protective Association were informed of the thefts and were out in force watching every avenue of escape. It is supposed he had an accomplice.

This protective association is a great thing, and the thief is generally brought to justice. Ilalligan Co. talk hot weather stuff. It will pleaso the woman. B.
