Judge Klijnli Robinson, of Loui-fann, is at tho Midland, sava the Kansas City Times. Judge Robinson is one of the best-known politicians in Centrul Missouri.

He has twice mudo the race for tho Democratic nomination for congress in the icvcnth district, and each time missed it by but a scratch. Two years ago the fight for tho nomination was a red hot though a friendly one. Judge Robinson, of Pike, and Richard Norton, of Lincoln, were the foremost candidates, mid before the day of the convention rolled around these two had distanced the rest of the crowd, and it was evident that ono or the other would win. It is the unexpected that always occurs in that dmtrict, and this fact kept every man in the race, and when the nominating convention mot in the little town of Warren ton, August 2ft, every candidato was in the field and the fun Iwgaii. Buttons were pulled o(T and button bolus pulled out until tho dele Rates were a careworn and unhappy-looking crowd.

The balloting was begun. Ballots to the uumlwr of 2iK) were taken. A deadlock was on. and for two days tho opposing forces battled. After the first day it narrowed down to Robinson and Norton.

There were sixty six votes in the convention. Thirty-four would nominate. Each could get thirty-three votes, but tho thirty-fourth jiersuled in vacillating. Tho second day of the convention, bo the story goes, Norton and Robinson met by appointment in the parlor of one of the hotels. Mutual friends were present, the doord were locked, and it was proposed to settle tho matter.

How shall it be doner" naked Robinson. "Flip a dollar," replied Norton. "Agreed," wa the answer. "Heads or tails?" Norton. "Tails," nhoutcd Robimon, ai the coin went spinning toward the ceiling.

Tails it was und Robinson took the coin. I'll take heads," said Norton. The coin came down with the goddess uppermost. It was horse and horse and tho excitement was intense. A seat in congress wa pending on tho next throw.

Not a man ppoke as Norton picked up the coin for the final throw. "Tails again, "said Robinson, ai Norton nervously flipped thy dollar. The calm face of tho goddess again camo ilowa lust and Norton had won. The two shook bands, went back to tho hnll, where the weary delegate were voting on about the six hundredth ballot. The tip was given; on the next ballot the deadlock was broken and Norton He was elected by 2,503 majority.

Judge Robin -on, who lost ft stnt in congress by the chance flip of dollar, is prominently mentioned as a candidato again two years hence. A rariiiiiui The many acpiui itunce.j of Mr. ami Mm. Rev nobis, prominent members of the Fir.it HaptUt church of this city, says die Minneapolis Journal, r.re telling un amusing story in which the two were the chief characters. The scene is laid in Cay Vails.

Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds recently made a lengthy European trip. While in Paris, they were patrons of a fashionable hotel. Several months lo-fore leawng for the tour abroad Mrs.

Reynolds assiduously appro 1 all energies to studying the French language. She was an nnus'ially ant scholar. When the time for Laving homo came Mr. Reynold's te.icher congratulated her upon the rapid manner in which she 1 ad mastered the language, nnd Mrs. Reynolds personally believed s' 0 whs proficient enough to cope with the 1'aris-iuus in their own buiguo wnen the gnat metropolis should le reached.

Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds spent inanv a pleasant day in 1'aris, and only have, in I rcineinhtance ono brief half day of ago- nizing misery. It happened this way: In Parisian hoteU thu attaches are Miavc and obliging. One afternoon Mr.

Rey nolds journeyed down town alone. When Mrs. Reynolds found herself ready to leave her apartments, she turned to the bnght-eyel waiting maid, and wiih tho let Lremh at her command, told the girl to tell her husband, when lie returned to the- rC'Oin, that fho had gone down into the public parlor, whciv the would wait for him. Out, ntadamo, ronlicd the girl with a knowing smile and a low courtesy. It was evident the girl had hail Mich commands ghen her before, Mrs.

Kevnol panned down to the pub lic parlor. She wailed a full hour for her hu-iband, and by ton time t.eeame very nervous over his non-apin'iir- ance. She went up sti'trs a went out upon the verandah. Whe; neaily op- tosite her apartments she heard drane sound- from wi.hiu. quickly to tlu window, she was thunderstruck to see her hunband pacing the lloor at a lively gait, wildly with hm hands, and muttering savagely.

Lver and anon he would try the door. It would not open. Mrs, Reynolds ran to his assistance; opened the door; the girl as found and then followed general explanations Mrs. Key olds Trench had Uippedhu up, to upoak. The girl understood her to say who should lock her husband in hen he returned, und hhe olrti.ed orders, llolh and Jlu Rm nolds afterward enjoyed the joke hugely.

'1 hereafter, however, Mrs. ReynohU insisted that the language of hot- forefathers um good tmouh for her. TSntloiiiil iovc 111UOI1 1. President y'vi I. Mortotr VV.

The principal item of news in newspaper published in a Kansas county containing a population of 25,000. pertained to a sick rooster. Among the 25,000 people, that was the only interesting thing that the editor could tied to publish. This about explains the situation here just now. However, the irony of the saying that "anybody can run a newspaper better than the editor," is lost in the face of such examples.

The Sombart homicidcwill he tried in this city at the June term of the district court on change of venue from Comanche county. Those wanting to sit as jurors in this important case may succeed to qualify as such if they will only forget what thev have already heard and read of it and keep their months shut and eyes closed and ears plugged until the case comes up for trial. An official statement of the financial condition of the l-'irst National Hank may be found in today's edition of the Citi.kx. Rev. Wilkinson preached his farewell sermon last Sunday. He has been pastor of the M. K. church for one year, and made a good record.

Should he not be returned to Ashland by confer ence, lie will be rememoered by our people as a conscientious worker. One of our contemporaries, in an obituary of an honored brother, says: "For two years preceding his death, he was acoiiNtant reader of the He was a great suflerer, but grace sustained him." How sad that he did not take to the reading of some other paper in time!
