Let everyone take hold of it with a will. Boss McCormick started for Denver, Thursday, where he will hereafter reside Ross knows how to distinguish between a "monkey Hush" and a "full hand," and will undoubt edly do well in the metropolis of Colorado. Our old friend Jno. E. Chase, of Lndell, was in the city Wednesday.

Mr Chase was iu the city of Oberlin when the writer first came to Kansas, over three years ago, and is gratefully remembered for kindnesses performed then. Tuesday last A. R. Ford exhibited a strange freak of nature on our streets in the shape cf a calf that had the nose, head, neck of a bull dog, but the body, hoofs, ears and tail of a calf. This monstrosity was dead at biith, but if Mr Ford succeeds iu preserving it, as he thinks he can, he will have one of the great curiosities of the times.

This strange freak of nature was viewed by a large number of people on Tnesday and all admit it as the greatest curiosity they ever beheld. Just at the opportune moment, when the seeds were beginning to need rain, it came in a steady downfall, hour after hour, from early Thursday morning till 1 day twenty-four hours of unceasing rain. The grass taken cn another hue changing from somber brown to emerald; the crops of wheat, rye, oats and potatoes are springing up with mushroom speed; the gardens ar green with swift-growing vegetables, and happiness and renewed confidence in the country are everywhere obser ved. This will be Cheyenne county's great year. a Rain again Friday night and early Saturday morning. Betore daylight the rain changed to snow and at the hour the editor arose, 5 o'clock, the ground was white with snow.

Satnrdav last while John C. Morrison and E. B. MeConne'l, two young men from Iowa, were driving past the house of F. II.

Baker, township 8 south range 43 west, Baker commanded them to stop. They did not heed the order and Baker fired upon them with asbot-irun loaded with slugs. The driver was not injured. Both Morrison and Mc- Council were riddled with shot, and McConneli died from his wounds. Hi remains arrived in Haigler this morn- ins in charge of his father and brother and a delegation of Burlington Odd Fellows, for shipment to his former home, Guthrie Centre, Iowa.

When the party left Burlington at 8 o'clock last night Morrison was still alive, though in a critical condition. He may recover. Baker was arrested and taken to Cheyenne Wells. A large number of men from the neighborhood of Burlington followed the sheriff's party to that place and Baker's body was found hanging to the coal chute. A special dispatch to the Denver Republican, dated Cheyenne Weils, April 17, says: "A Coroner's inquest was held here to-day on the body of Franklin H.

Bilker, of Burlington, who was hanged under the order of lynch law for the murder of John C. Morrison and E. B. McConnell near Burlington on last Saturday afternoon. The jury returned a verdict to the effect that the deceased met bis death by hanging at the hands of unknown parties, suffering from an epidemic of transitory frenzy.

When the sun rose this morning the body of Baker was hanging under the trestle of the cord chute, swaying in the breezes, while the citizens of Burning-ton were peaceably entering the sub urbs cf their native heath forty miles away, and the county of Bent and citizens of Cheyenne Wells were left to foot the bills and hold tbe bag. Bird McConnell, one of the young men who lost his life at the hands of the lynched assassin, was to have been married to a young lady of Iowa on the first of next month, ne had come west to establish his home, expecting to return for his expectant bride. A short time before his death he made a will, leaving all of his property to his affianced. He was possessed of considerable property and comes of one of the best families of Iowa. His father is expected tonight to take charge of the remains.

Baker's wife, who was arrested in Burlington as an accomplice in the murder, was released this morning on her own recognizance. At the inquest today it was stated that Baker had breastworks built of sod r.t his claim shanty and had made preparations to shoot without warning whoever passed the house on the public highway. It is claimed that Baker has boasted of once killing a man in Missouri and escaped conviction on the plea of insanity. As the rope was about his neck last night this question was put to him but before he could speak he had gone to a higher aud more just tribunal. Baker is well known in Haigler, hav ing spent a good deal of last summer here.

It seems that the road ran across his farm and he had tried to change it to the section line, but as people still traveled the old road he be came enraged and said be would shoot the next man who drove across his land. He kept his word, and met a just reward. The party fired upon was composed of strangers who were totally ignorant of the state of affairs. The driver was a Wano roan. Latest in- lormatiou is that Morrison home is in Ohio.
