From Wano we went to Bird City, i.he capital of Cheyenne county. Leaving the valley of the South Republican we again climbed upon the lift, however, until we bad gone sortu five or six mik-s out of the way, on a wrong road. But we there all the- sitme. On our arrival we noticed pesters sticking up iu every building, announcing that congressman Turner and Capt. G. A. Norton, candidate foe Secretary of State would address the people of Bird City and vicinity that evening.

Tne meeting was held in the court house, and the large room was crowded. The speakers entertained their listeners for two hours, making a good impression upon their listeners, and winning them many friends. Bird City as our party fpipicf it, was astir with business. The Cliampimi hunted up the newspaper boys. On the Democrat we found our esteemed friend Will C.

Hydon, editing the Democracy of the county, and George W-. Murray publishing tha. Of course the boys immediately shut up shop, put on clean shirts and showed us around. D. Cave, probate judge of the county, soon showed up, and tjien the tramp cammenced.

In the office of udge Cave are these appropriate mottoes: "Bird City never sleeps," and 'Stay with it," suggestive of the good eeliiig cropping out among all- her people. The general store of the Messrs. Kerndt Bros, is among the largest west of Beioit. Their sales must be enoimous. The immense store room occupied by this firm is filled with everything found in a first class general store.

Richards. Mr. Webster has adopted two expedients in order to encourage punctuality, good deportment and a high grade of scholarship. The first is, any pupil who is perfect in attendance, has good deportment-, and" whose average standing in his studies for the school month is ninety per is given a half hol-day at the close of the month. Hasty, the house mover, in effigy the other day- Thomas Quinn, of Cheyenne county, made complaint last Tuesday against a neighbor, Mike O'Laughlin, charging him with the theft of a load of hay.
