In the end nobody is the wiser, because so much depends on.tho wife, and so much more on the husband, that it is impossible to lix upon any sum that will ap ply to all cases.

So the question is never settled. Lt'ltv. TMlltffj. If the husband is an editor of a coun try newspaper, the expended of the "couple" will be in direct ratio with the generosity of his mother-in-law. Second Comptroller Waynard has made his annual report to the secretary of the treasury from which it appears that during the Usual year ending 30, 188(1, he settled accounts claims and cases to the number of 50,828 involving the sum of 220,310,310, being an increase of 311 per cent over the number of claims and accounts adjusted during the previous fiscal year, and an increase of 105,1 4(5, 11)2 or over 87f per cent in the amount of accounts and claims adjusted.

The large increase in the amount of the accounts adjusted he says is the result of an ellort to dispose of the unfinished work in tho ad justment of the, accounts of disbursing otlicers which has accumulated in pre vious years, and mainly those of army paymasters and pension agents. Wchae lately received several letters of inquiry concerning tiijs country from persons living in the east. Instead of giving aspecial answorto each one, wet)iii)k it better to make a sort pf general answer to all through our colums, We do this as a matter of Information to other eastern readers. Here are spme of the important ijnes-fsons. Each answer is numbered to porresppiul to the question to which it relates. 1.

Is there any good land in your pounty 2. AVhat does it oost to take a claim? 8. Would I be compelled to move on my land at the time of making my entry? 4. How deep is it to water? 5.1s there any timber in the county? 8. AVhat kind of grass grows on the prairies 7.

Has Bird City a railroad? 8. If not, what is the nearest fl. II. point? 9. What crops seem to do the befit in your county 10.

Has there been any coal discovered in your county 1. Plenty of it; but nearly all desirable land has been taken. Kelinquish-pients can be bought cheap. 2. It costs $14.

to enter a homestead timber claim; pre-emptions, 2. 3. On a homestead, there is six months time given in which to establish a residence. In the cuce of a pre-emption the claimant is supposed to have established a residence or made settlement, prior to the time of making application for entry. No residence is required on a timber claim.

4. From 75 to 220 feet. When reached, the supply is inexhaustible. 5. Scarcely any.

6. Mostly buffalo grass. In some places blue-stem is quite abundant. Alfalfa and other grasses do well. 7.

No. 8. Benkleman, on the li. twenty-three miles north. 6.it would be hard to tell yet.

Every thing that was planted this year did well. All grains do well. 10. No Several other questions have been asked, most or them unimportant, and some of them foolish For instance pne man askeiwhether or not the settlers had any trouble with the Indians. Another wanted to know if the land Sharks destroyed any crops.

ADVERTISING. In the'developement of trade during the past generation or two, advertising has been resorted to and employed as never before, and through its medium- ship the business enterprises of the country have been brought into prom inence and before the public. The man who best understands this important governing principle of trade who realizes the necessities of the times and seeks to satisfy them; who systematically and wisely advertises his business and gives people to understand that he really means business and is thoroughly alive to all that is going on, he above all others other things being equal is the man who makes a financial triumph in life and has his efforts crowned with the laureled wreath of success. The ways of advertising are innumerable, and oftentimes display the greatest ingenuity, and while some are nonsensical, others sensational, and some more effective than others, still they re recognized as the motive power whose force moves the wheels of commercial enterprise. As temporary expedients and capers of trade some of these methods, no doubt accomplish their object to a certain extent, but the newspaper has long since been acknowledged the only legitimate advertising medium, and through its periodical columns thousands of advertisers speak to millions of readers.

Newspapers go every where, are read by all classes, at home and abroad, and there is scarcely an individual in the land whose patronageis worth inlluenc-ing who does not take or read a newspaper, or who may not be directly appealed to by a well advised advertisement. Our business men having faith in their own wares realize that it is the most effective means for securing a wide recognition of the merits of their goods, and the most energetic and successful salesman they can engage. Ceaselessly at work, it addresses thousands each day, in the interests of the advertiser and is a persistant canvasser Whoes solicitations it is impossible to escape, Benkleman (Neb.) News. The benificent working of the Dow liquor tax law, passed in Ohio last -winter, is shown by the fact that 63 towns have already established local -prohibition under it. It is only two or three months since it became under stood that the law gave towns such a right, and it seems clear that if the su preme court sustains it the rural saloon in Ohio must go.

Only two of these S2 towns have 6,000 inhabitant and 30 of them have less than 1000, Lev.
