The recent rains havo little or no effect on the river or creeks in this vicinity. It will evidently take a good many more rains to make a good supply of water. Birckets have started their meat wagon out through the country this morning, to supply the farmers with fresh beef and other meats during LOTTERY 8WIND12. A prominent Chicago paper pub lisheathe following warning German residents in the United States: One of the most impudent and barefaced lottery schemes ever devised is now being operated throughout tho United States. The swindle is mainly-designed for victimizing the German speaking contingent in large parlies ana has already achieved a tolerable success.

A concern styling itself "Messrs. Thiclo bankers, Hamburg, Germany," through au agent in Baltimore, Maryland, has flooded the country with letters addressed to German residents in all the large cities. These letters contain a circular giving a glowing description of the "two hundred and ninety-second German lottery of the city of. Hamburg." They announce that any amount may be remitted by means of the American Express company's money order payable at Hamburg, Germany. Baron Von Xordenflycht, the German consul, said: "This L-one of the most palpable swindles I ever had brought to my notice.

Ther; is no such lotteiy as the German government lottery. The government of the German empiro has no connection or control any7 lot tery or premium enterprise whatever. Simon Gaithcr has rented the old photograph gallery building and is using it as a carpenter shop. Work on L. Bircket's new house is progr. ssinr, the frame is raised and the house partially sided. Rev.

Collins, wife and child, form erly- of this city, but now of Philadelphia, is here on business. Irvine White moved into his new house this week, and now has as comfortable a home as the city con tains. Luther Ross has finished plastering Irvin White's house, also G. II. Bigelow's new" house is nearly completed.

The rains that have fallen this week have been general throughout Kansas, and the long drouth seems to have ended. The time of ihe hand concert has not been definitely decided, bnt will probably occur about the first or second week in May. Mr. J. Danenhour, tho Artie explorer, shot and ki.lcd himself, at tho naval academy at Annapolis, April 20lh. He had mental trouble after he came back from the Artie region. A fatal shooting affray occurred at Wilson's mill, about thirty miles north of Clarksville, Texas, between two half breeds named Wilson and two Indians from the Choctaw Na tion. Both Indians were killed and one of tho Wilsons seriously wounded in the thijrh. The Times of Clay Center warned that city7 against a gang of burglars which was undcrstoood to be en route to Clay Center.

It reached there according to programme, and the only successful venture was in robbing ona of the owners of the paper. Four other unsuccessful at-temp's were mat'e. John Ray and Wm. Carson, neighbors, living in James, were on very friendly terms until Wednesday afternoon when they quarrelled about a piece of land. Both drew pistols and fired simultaneously and both were instantly7 killed, Carson being shot in tho temple and Ray received a bullet in the heart.

The death of Alexander Mitchell, president of the Chicago, Milwaukee St Paul railroad is announced. He was a resident of the city of Milwaukee, and reputed worth 000,000 to 825,000,000. He had servid two terms in congress, and was possessed of large influence in l.is city and state, as was natural for a man of his great wealth. Queen Kapiolani, of the Hawaiian kingdom arrived at San Francisco, Wednesday7, from Honolulu on the steamer Australia. She was accompanied by Princess Lillinokaluui and a number of high officials of the Hawaiian government.

The prin cipal object of the queen's voy7age is to be present at Qaeen Victoria's jubilee celebration in London in June. A Lincoln, Nebraska, special says: There is a well defined rumor to the effect that the Union Pacific stockholders are quietly preparing to sur renier the old Union Pacific main line for the government debt and abandon their Omaha and Council Bluffs terminus, making tho several branche of the Union Pacific, which are owned by7 them independent of the government line a new svstem of with Lincoln as the eastern terminus. In the columns of one of ihe morning papers appeared an adve lisement for a 75,000 draft which had been lost or stolen. It was a draft of the bank of Xorth America of Philadelphia, on the Xew York National Banking association, of New York, and dated April 7, 1S87, No. 223, for $75,000, to the order of Dunn Brothers, and is supposed to have gone astray in the mails.

The letter which contained the draft was mailed at Philadelphia on April 7. Payment was stopped. Saturday night, constable Chas Barnfield of Butler county7, Missouri, went to Xeelyville, with a possee of half a dozen deputys, to arrest two outlaws and quietly7 took positions to await their coming. On the same night the Ripley county sheriff came to Xeelyville on the same mission Neither party knew of the others presence. The Butler county men had hardly taken a position when they heard the Ripley county depu tics approaching and supposed they were the outlaws who had increased in anticipation of trouble.

He was returning to Saiina from a tiip to Dakota, where ho had been to inspect a large public building in that state, and took the opportunity to stop and see his family. We have been told that a gentleman living in this vicinity has came up from Wichita and reports the graders at work on the Kansas, Col orado Texas near Wichita, and that the surveyors are staking the permanent survey7 this way7. This is probably true as the Wichita proposition calls for the completion of tho road in that county sometime before the time in the Americus proposition. Makried. The Burlingame Chronicle of Thursday, April 14, says The surveying party for the Kansas, Colorado Texas road were in town over Sunday. Mr. Collins, the engineer in charge, informed us that they had run a permanent lino from Centropolis extending one mile into Osage county.

They returned to work Monday and are coming this way, expecting to reach Burlingame within a day or two. Since the above was published we have been told by an Admire City gentleman, who went to Burlingame to see where the surveyors were for himself, that the surveying party has passed Burlingame and are coming this way, and no preventing we may expect them in Americus about May 3 or A limited number 1 1 milch co.ws will be taken to pasture in the pasture near L.
