After getting Mr. Hahn home he told me that he was on his wav to Oxford for a load of coal for his threshers; tound the chain across the bridge locked; that, being in a hurry and no one there to unlock it, lie picked up nn iron bar and was about to pry otl'a steeple when Sim Baughn arrived; cried out to him to hurry or he would break tho lock; Sim began swearing, saying he would shoot him; that he had taken enough from him. Hiilm nsked him not to shoot, and lit the time he was shot was in the net of getting his money out to pay him the toll. J.

M. 11UKKINOTOV was the next witness sworn, who said: When I arrived on the scene of the shooting Uuelo David Halm was lying on the bank at the west end of the bridge; I raised his head mid put a coat under It. He said to me "I was in a hurry and wo talked rough to each other ns usual." Enter lie said that Sim came down, unlocked the chain, stepped back and shot; Hahn told him not to shoot. I asked him (Hahn) if Sim shot as quick as he drew his pistol. lie replied Hint he bad seen men who "could hnvo shot four times while Sim was getting his pistol out." After be ing shot Hahn asked Sim to unhitch his team and take tliem off the bridge and send somebody to him, which was done.

run VKItMCT. After giving due consideration to the above testimony, the Coroner's jury rendered a verdict, in substance, that David llahn came to his death from a gunshot wound inflicted felsnously by Simeon Baughn, on the toll bridge that spans the Arkansas river near Oxford, on the 21)lh day of Xoveinbor, 1884. Througoiit his whole life lie had the name and reputation of lieing an honorable, upright mini, a good neigh, bor and good provider for his large family. The funerul services took place Wednesday noon in the church by the Clark school house, conducted by Judge Cans of infield, and he was buried in Hie church-yard near by.

Dralli and nurlal. A shocking affair occurred near our usually quiet town about sun-rise lust Saturday morning, which resulted in the death of one of our oldest citizens. The circumstances as nearly as investigation thus far lias revealed, art! about as follows: Mr. David llahn, who lived about a mile and a half east of this city, being ready to have his wheat threshed last Saturday morning, Marled for Oxford very early in the morning after a load of coal for use. of the threshers.

Arriving at the toll bridge (the new one not being quite finished), he found the chain across it locked and no one there. Being in a hurry and rather impatient to get across, lie picked up a bar of iron and was in the act of pry ing out a steeple when Sim Baughn, the toll kecicr, returned Ho his post. Evidence bo fur obtained shows that somo angry words were patsed between tho two men, just what they were it is impossible for us to knowingly or truthfully state. A war of words, however, resulted in Sim shooting Mr. Ilahu through the light lung, the bull penetrating (o the spine and causing paralysis of the entire lower part of bis body and limbs.

Sim notified his brother John of what had been done, who at once Went for Dr. Maggard, Sim in tho meantime coming up to BuflTnglou's stable and gave himself into custody. Later in the day Sim, accompanied by Mayor Bullingtou, went to infield to procure counsel and while there ho was arrested through a dispatch Irom Deputy Sherill Metcalf, taken to Wellington Monday morning and lodged in jail, where lie still remains. Mi-. Ilahu was conveyed home, where he lay in terrible agony until Tuesday morning when ho breathed hit last.

On Tuesday evening Coroner R. W. Stephens came to Oxford, im-paueled a jury, consisting of Messrs. (ico. J.

Hess, E. A. Krauich, Will Grirlin, C. G. Tilton, J.

C. Lowman and W. A. Clark, who repaired to the late residence of David Ilalin and held an inquest. ookonf.k's ltfyUKST.

The first witness sworn and examined was SILAS p. iiaiin', whoso testimony was as follows: Ar riving at tho bridge Saturday morning, I found my father lying on his back about fifteen feet from Hie west end of the bridge on tho bank. His first word! to me were: "Silas, I Isdievc ill back is broken; I can't move my legs; I begged him not to shoot; What is such a man allowed to live for? I gave him no cause to shoot." f. J. HaHV, sworn and said: I found him at the west end of tho bridge.

He said: "Oh, Johnnie, 1 am a dead man!" I asked tho cause of his being shot. He did not tell me much at that time. Said he drove on to the bridge and the chain was locked and nobody there to unlock it; got onfof the wagon and picked up a bar of iron to pry oil" tho steeple; while In the act Sun runic and commen ced cursing; told him "ho had no right to lock tho bridge at that hour of the day and go oil anil leave it; Sim replied that I won a liar, at tho same time drawing his revolver; told him not to shoot, and stepped back a couple of steps; did not think ho would shoot, or could have got out of his way behind the wagon." I asked if Sim shot as soon as he drew his revolver. "No; I was getting out my money to pay tho toll when he SI US. KLI7.AIir.TH IIAIIN, sworn and suld: Ho stated to mo after being-brought home that Sim shot him without a cause; said he was getting his money out when Sim shot him; told him not to shoot, and did not think lie would shoot.

Theio was another person' testimony taken, but wo failed to procure il. The inquest was then adjourned till Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock, and was re convened in Hess' hall at that hour, when two more gentleman were exam ined, viz, Dr. Maggard and J. M. Uuf-tJiigtou.

Hit. I. J. MAOQAItl) being duly sworn, said: Saturday morning, between daylight uud sunrise, I crossed tho bridgo coming west; the bridge was open; I drove to my olllee, thence to tho barn und unhitched team from buggy; while doing this one of John Baughu's boys camo to mo and said for me to go down to the bridge, as David llahn had been shot. I asked who shot him, and he replied that Sim sent him to tell mo.

I immediately went to the plaoo und found David llsl'il lying on his back, with his head Ci ou east, on the pontoon bridge about s.i feet from the west end and on tho south side of the bridge; found him 'unable to move Hlio lower portion of his body or legs; iiHked him how he wit.i shot. On examination found a gun shot wound hi tho right breast just below tho nipple, the ball ranging backward and downward on line with the spinal column, mid, in my (pinion, striking (ho spinal column and above the town two miles a saloon was running. A couple of bard characters ot drunk there, clime down to Ashland each day and rode furiously through the streets firing their revolvers. Finally the citizens got together. a few shot guns and made prepationsto lay them out at the next foray.

The roughs heard of this so sneaked down and laid outside of town until two young men who were boarding at a dugout near by came down to supper when they crawled up and killed them. They then went up to the saloon for a fresh supply of whisky. Soon a deputy sherill' tiinie along and captured one of them, tho other getting away. The captured murderer was taken to Ashland, and placed under a strong guard while pursuit was made for the other one. During the night a party of armed men took him away from the others and hung him.

They then went tip to hang the saloon kccjicr but he had fled. A resolution was passed by the body of vigilanters that the first man who set up a saloon in Bear valley, should bo hung without further warning. In that country, where every man carries a big six-shooter, whisky is the bimo of civilization. Sober, they are pleasant social gentlemen, but drunk they shoot tear and up the (Mirth. Tho settlers along those valleys are mostly from Cowley and Sumner counties, have gone there lawfully to make themselves homes and they do not propose to be disturbed in the pursuits of pence by tho illegal presence of a whisky shop.

One of the young men killed was a cousin of Treasurer Nipp. They bad both recently married in Kentucky and, leaving their wives 1h hind, had come west to build up homes, hen they would have brought tliem on. It was a cold-blooded whisky murder. A reward of eight hundred dollars has been offered for the body of the escaped murderer, dead or alive, by the town company and citizens of Ash- laud. The people of the town have nnned themselves with Winchesters and shot-guns and the next man who rides into the place and shows blood-thirsty I symptoms will die very quick Courier, E.
