(iovernor Humphie, candidate tor Cuiiirrcss and ml tr V. lieeknian, of 1 Ai kansa-i Citv, were trieeted with an immense audience at the oiiera house ill this city last Friday nijjlit. ilcpub- lican doctrine and Republican history were ably discussed. The first was Gov. Humphrey, who was intro- ilucetl bv our fellow citizen, Judge Case, who took oeea-ion to pay him a high compliment for his record as chief executive of the state.

Gov. Hum- phrey's remarks were well received. He does not attempt any oratorical flights, but talks in a plain, sensible manner on the issues, appeal attempt any oratorical ing to the reason and calm judgement of his hearers to sustain his remarks. It was his lirst speech in Oswego and it made him friends even with those who oppose hiiu politically. If Governor Humphrey is scut to congress the people can rest assured that their interests will be safely guarded.

Mythology of the ancients treats of one Orpheus, a harpist, hose power upon the instrument was so great, his touch so dctt, his music so plaintive and alluring that sticks, stones, trees, and mountains were so entranced by the harmony of sounds that they moved toward and followed him. Even the devils in hell were so charmed that the doors were opened and he passed in and out without harm. The harp of Orpheus was not more charming than the voice of Judge tieekman who followed Governor Humphrey. For two hours he talked to the audience 011 issues new and old, but of vital interest to the neojde of to-tlav and of the future. His points were so well taken; his argument so convincing; his ridicule of the buncombe advanced by the reform ers so laughable that his audience were loud in their demonstrations of approval.

Judge lieeknian is the man who spoke at Montana several weeks ago and worsted s. rung, a people Par! orator ot Kansas City, ami was I abused long and loud therefore by the adherents of King. Yet lieeknian sought not to retaliate by abuse, but rat her by argument and lncontrovert-able truth did lie effectually smite them. A Remarkable Discovery. A remarkable discovery is one of tne chronic proclamations of advertisers.

la Labette county, two years ago, the People's party demanded that the count prin! ing be let to the lowest bidder, but hen avoided an opportunity, they cast it aside ith the remark that "to the victors hi long the spoils." They followed I he example set by the Alliance legislature iu electing a slate printer. They, too, said "to the victors belong the spoils," and thereby made a steal of thiily thousand dollars; and if the county commissioners were true in hat they said be fore election, then they perpetrated a fraud again-t the people of eight hundred dollar. This is handsome reform. This is wol done by the "holier than thou'' people. Will you vote to Mi-! 1:11 them at the polls? OSWEGO.
