22nd. Stancliffe's Orchestra. Everybody come. Some excitement was aroused Sunday evening by the report that a young woman had tried to commit suicide at the Rock Island depot. It seems that the young lady who was going through on the train was a suf.

ferer with asthma and got off here to get fresh air. People at the station saw her acting rather queer and when she put a bottle of medicine to her face they thought she was sting suicide. MORE PAVING Petitions have been completed for five more blocks of paving on the Hill Dr. Eye circulated a petition for the street north from the high school and secured the signers for the three blocks, which will connect that street with the new paving at the LacKamp property. Roy Sumner circulated a petition and secured the necessary number of signers for paving two blocks south from the Tilson corner.

This brings the new paving undertaken this summer to about a mile and a half. NEW RESTAURANT Mr. Wm. Oldham, who has been running the lunch counter on north Second street for some will open a restaurant probably Saturday of this week in the room recently vacated by Mrs. McCormac's millinery shop.

He intends to conduct a first class place. New furniture and fixtures will be installed. There will be a lunch counter, general dining tables and individual tables in booths. The restaurant will go under the name of "Bill's Place." REAL ESTATE TRANSFERS George L. McKay and wife to Leland Thompson pt.

Wheeler, George Kaiser of Lincolnville, Dr. Kaiser of Goessel and Mr. Patrick, formerly of Goessel were at the Inman lakes the first of the week shooting. TRAIN CLAIMS THREE MORE Another frightful accident happened last Friday afternoon when the west bound Santa Fe passenger struck a car in which five people were riding, three miles northwest of Hillsboro. In the car were Mrs.

Kablanow and her daughters, Adina and Helen Kablanow, who taught in the neighborhood where the accident happened, and her two grandchildren Elmer and Janzen. Mrs. Kablanow and Miss Adina were killed instantly and little Elmer Janzen died several hours later at the Hillsboro hospital. The other two will recover. The other members of the party had gone after Miss Helen Kablanow to take her toe her home near Aulne and were crossing the track three miles west and a half mile north of Hillsboro when the train struck them.

The crossing is a very bad one. There is a cut on the railroad which helps obscure an approaching train, but the thing which contributes the most to the danger of the place is a hedge which runs almost up to the track. Dr. Marner, coroner, was summoned and a coroner's jury made up of P. C.

Hiebert, Jacob E. C. Schmidt, Jacob Loewen, Otto Weyand, B. P. Pauls and John H.

Nickel was called and found a verdict in part as follows "We find the cause of the collision in an obstructed view on account of the train running behind an embankment. The road is low, in addition there is a HEDGE ON TOP OF THE EMBANKMENT. These obstructions hide a car and train from each other's view until it is too late to avoid an collision if both are running rapidly. We further find that both hedge and embankment should be removed in order to make the crossing reasonably safe." The funeral service for the three who passed away was held Sunday at the Ebenfeld church south of Hillsboro. CITY INVEST SURPLUS The finances of the city are in such condition that Mayor Good and the commissioners decided this week to invest some of the surplus in interest bearing securities.

There had quite a surplus accumulated but it was not thought enough to attempt any considerable improvements at present. Five thousand dollars was drawn from the general fund and five thousand from the water and light fund for the purpose of investment. This a fine showing fo the city so in the face of increased costs. MR. GARLOUGH RESIGNED Mr.
