Alumni correspondence. Pro.n the Af.aUemj mmleot. On Wednesday, September 4th, W9, I started from Eureka, it being dark (till; not preferring night for the reason 1 have heard men sometimes do when they ohoose not to meet their friends as they jro departing for other and more healthy olimatcs, but by so doing 1 could the Doner reach my destination, linker Uni, versify. Starting from Eureka at 11 p. by changing cars at Garnett and Ottawa and passing a few hours pleasantly (V) waiting for trains, I arrived at liaker at 8:110 o'clock the next morning.

The depot being, I should judge, about one salt mile from the University buildings and the town proper, 1 took a back and soon found myself at liaker and had my arrangements mado for a place to board. Now let me tell you of tho school. I find that liaker University was chartered in February, 1H.W, and is the the oldest educational institution in the state, and without a break to the present time, it has been in operation. It is under the control of the M. K.

church, but ia not sectarian. There arc two buildings, each somewhat larger than the S. K. A. One is built of stone; the thor of brick.

Each is three stories high. These buildings are located in the center a beautiful campus of sixteen acres which is adorned with many nice trees. The faculty is composed of thirteen loinbers all exporeienced educators. lr. Gobin, tho president, was a member the faculty of the De 1'euw University for several years and is said to be one of the best speakers in the state.

Dr. lioss, professor of oratory and elocution, has been a teacher for many years and has achieved much success. Ho was formerly Superintendent of public instruction in Indiana, and has been president of our tlUite Normal school. The list is too long for me to mention each one separately, however, they all loom to be especially adapted to their lino work and try to be as helpful to the tudent as possible. They smile very benignly upon us if wo venture to remind them that they have given us an extra long and hard lesson.

1 ave noticed, however, that it protiis us sot in the least to remonstrate. It is seldom that a class enters a recitation room with a poor lesson. Every one seems to do his best. None appear to bo going imply tuu, hero is a egend, how ever, connected with this school that once upon a time a bov did at end here who liked to read signs and sleep in the eool, cool shade better than he liked his books. On examination day being asked tho question why ho took a certain study wrote, in a bold and characteristic hand tins answer, "To help me along in my corse." Tho poor boy, however, did not get Helped along in his course us ho tailed to make tho required grades, and was soon allerwu.ru sent Home to couilort his tattier liaker has one hundred and two alumni, nine of whom have, already, become men of notj.

Of these 1 might mention Dr. M. V. 11. Knox.

Dr. Hall, and I'rof. Ouavln. For the lust few years the graduates have averaged about ten a year. One large room is set apart for the library and reading room.

The library contains over volumes of the best literature, and the readliur room is mm. Flied with many daily and weekly papers, might mention that this institution publishes two papers, "The liaker lieacon," and "The Baldwin Index." The museum is fine. I'rof. Parmenter. who has charge of this department has two large rooms filled with "all manner of four-footed beast of the earth and wild know that they are well patronized.

The Y. M. C. A. and Y.

W. C. A. take a prominent part here. They bold religious meetings every Sunday atternoon, after which they divide into classes for the purpose of Bible studv.

1 he niemuers ol these associations look after new students, getting them boarding places and giving them Christian sympathy and friendship. The lecture course is ublo. It comprises five lectures a year from men of national reputation, such as Senator lngalls, Hob liordette, Maj. Dane, Joseph Cook, John Clark Hedpath. Gen.

Lew Wallace, Gov. Cumback, A. W. Tourgee, Bishops How-man and Vincent. To attend the live lectures costs but SI 1 had almost forgotten to sav anything concerning the literary societies.

There are four two for boys ami two for girls. They hold their meetings Saturday evenings. The lirst portion is literary and open to all: the latter part is for business and none but members can be present. The programs are similar to those of the I'ioneer, ill that they are always good. Before ten o'clock they must adjourn as one of the few rules of this institution is that each student must be in his room at that hour, at which time the college bell rings.

It also rings at half past five each school morning to gently remind us to bestir ourselves for the day's work. This work is divided off into recitation periods fifty minutes long. Our holidays are on Monday instead of Saturday ami 1 like this plan very much. The enrollment is over three hundred and fifty. This town is truly a college town, for the school controls the town and not the tow the school.

The people are very sociable and one can not long remain a Btranger in their midst. 1 am asked quite frequently where 1 have been going to school ami I am happy to be able to sny, "At the Southern Kansas Academy in Eureka which is under the management or liev. A. 1. nurnell.
