SAM. a. McCONNELL, The Artist Tailor, No. 75 Mass. LAWRENCE, KS Hisniarck sinned almost deserted this afternoon.

At 2 o'clock, however, the Veil was rung to call in the scattering few who were utrolling about the grounds, and twenty minutes later when about thiity hud gathered in the tabernacle, the. meeting was called to order by a dignified, venerable looking gentleman, who, we were informed, was Judge Fisher, ot Wichita. The chairman, with very little explanation or ceremony in regard to the object of the meeting, or what was to be done, called for Prof. Phelps, of Kansas City, who had just arrived on the grouuus. Mr.

I'helps began by saying thai lie cmi gratubited the audience and himself, too, on being able to congregate in the pleasant grove of Bismarck and discuss the great and leading questions of the day. The philosophy of infidelity and skepticism is little understood. An infidel, in the true Hcnse of the term, is one who has disci.rd-ed the various tenets of orthodoxy and has become an independent thinker. The philosophy of infidelity is a system of free thought; thought cannot be free unless the bnly be free. That grand old clause in the Declaration of Independence would mean nothing unless we were free to carry it out.

The enslavement of the mind is the result of the enslavement of the body. The speaker ished to say soim tiling in regard to the illiberality of Liberals, he did not wish those who were free from the Bhackles of the church to Impose their own shackles on others. It was impossible for all to think alike. No two persons could cognize the same thing so as to con-vey the same ideas to the min is of ea'-h. Liberals should not desire to mold every mind in the same as their own, tiiat sivors, of orthodoxy.

The pride, of the nineteenth century, as uttered by Tyndal, D.irain, and Others, is that we change. The speaker illustrated this by telling about the origin of the plow, which, he said, wuj made Lorn the folk of a by a priest. The. inventor lorba.le anyone making anvthiiii! like it, he got up monopoly; finaKy the plow broke, ami some one SiitgeMi-d an improvement, but the priest said to improve upon that plow would be to as ume that the sugyestor knew more than the Creator of the universe, lor it was lie who showed him how to make it; but the improvement was made, and tiie result is the evolution of the modern plow. Thus change has been gMng on in opposition to the church, and it has no claims on civilization whatever.

If any were present who would think to the contrary, he would refer them to Mexico under the influence of Christians, and to China, whose religion, rlbu of Confucius, as und pure us any Chiistiau religion. Civilization depend-upon the amount of brains in a race, and the shape of the head, and not on the Christian religion or any other. There are several things that aid civilization and free thought, nnd free the mind from the burden of orthodoxy, and the greatest of these is journalism. The press is the power that may move us on to great end. in the West could be made the power of unearthing fraud, exposing corruption, and denouncing evil, and thereby contribute materially to the achievement of universal mental liberty.

The speaker made a lew remarks on the kind of religion in which he believed, but it was not that kind which ha! Gods, Chrlsts, prophets and ghosts mixed up with It, Ho believed the devil developed Mr. I'helps was not so radical in his remarks this year as he was lust year for theu he, by his extreme views, was dubbed "The wickedest man in the West." After the speaker took his seat, a gentleman hose name wo did noo learn, arose and said he was well acquainted with his Satanic majesty, the devil He sang a song entitled "The Devil is Dead."
