St. being made to recall the Mayor of Lawrence. The report of no arrests for accepting bribes or selling official influence had reached our ear. No specific overt acts ot gross incompetency or neglect 'f duty had been reported. Had some crime been committed? What reason, then existed for recalling the Mayor? Up to the present time no adequate reason has been made known.

Mo definite charges have been made and proved. So far as the public has been informed only vague accusations and unauthentic hear-say exist. It is a serious matter to recall an official and extremely uncomplimentary to make such attempt. It is an imputation against an individual which ought not be tolerated for any such motives as jealousy, personal or political differences or disappointment in failing to elect another or in getting an appointment to some minor office. Perfect, indeed, must be the man who could become Mayor under a new form of City Government and make no mistakes.

There is no official act of any moment which could possibly please all of his constituents. Without the slightest reflections upon any one, what person could take the place and please everybody? Have we any one so perfect that he can be guaranteed not to make mistakes? The citizens of Lawrence as a whole have no disposition to insult the Mayor and the large majority of his friends who elected and re-elected him will doubtless give no serious consideration to this unexplained attempt to recall. kins building and has built up a splendid business which now occu pies four rooms.
