Robertson. Tho following letter was written by Dr. Goo. E. Robertson, of this place, to tho Grant County, (Wis.) Witness Jan.

17. 1880: Mr. Editor: Fearing I may fail in fulfiling my promises to all who have requested me to write, with your permission I will avail myself of the benefit of tho Witness, which 1 suppose every one takes. I shall contino myself to a few facts in relation to this little city and count', so that any one can understand it; and without re gard to svstem or style. Not half tho efforts havo been made to represent this portion of Kansas as has been by agents and scpculators to represent the Santa Fc ioad.

Yet it is a coneeeded point that this is tho very best portion of tho State. Boarding a3ldoatone of tho best hotels I meet commercial men and ether gentlemen who have visited every section of this country and while they are ready to speak favorably of tho state in general, they readily admit that no county excels Clay or fertility of soil, beauty of location, excellence 01 ino roaus anu improvement according to its age. I have met many here from Illinois and several from Grant Wis. All seem to be doiRg well. Mr.

Barnes from Wisconsin owns and runs a large steam mill and is doing a tremendous business, la one vear he sent off 550 car loads of rti- 1 1 gram ana sou car ioaas 01 grouuu stuff. I am told that quite as much is sent from Mr.Doxter's water mill in the vicinity of the other. I found bins of corn two hundred feet long and Diles of it on the ground, corn shcllers at work in all directions, eight torses or mules attached to ono machine. The elevators con- vevinp- the rrrain to the cars and farmers with strings of wagons keep-inc un the suddIv. The amount brought in is wonderful and they readily get from 20 to 21 cents per bushel.

Wheat brings a dollar and oats from 36 to 40 cents. One great recommendation to the little city of Clay Center, is that the county around is in advance of the town Tho latter is not much oyer eight years old; it contains about 2,000 inhabitants. During the last year I understand there were over nity new houses erected and they 6ay there will be more than that number this year. -The dwellings a gen eral thinrr are small. I suppose it is owing to tho hurry to build and hio-h nrice of lumber.

Tho stores are quite large and nicely finished understood tho rent ot thoso is from eisrht hundred to a thousand dollars a year. But every little shop is rented and occupied. They havo three very largo lumber yards The "Localist" is published every Thursday at $1.00 a year, invar-' iably in advance. TO CCERESPOfiDENTS.
