Can it be that Judge Adna P. Gristlebone, the statesman and scientist of Coolidge, can be classed among them? A Misouri man who recently moved to Caney propounds a number of questions to one of the papers. Among them is the following: I notice over in the east part of town there is a family of five with only three dogs. Would you consider this number sufficient to protect a home, seeing the number of dogs is less than the family? After all, do you consider the great number of dogs that we have as being of any special value to the growth and development of Caney? W. Fulton Street. KANSAS STATE FAIR. One of the matters to which Governor Hoch called attention in his message was the advisability of a state fair. The plan outlined by the governor was for a fair that would be really representative of the resources of the state and which would give visitors from other states a desire to see more of this great commonwealth.

Speaking of the advisability of holding such a fair, the governor said: "I have long believed that the state should have such an institution, that it should be no cheap affair, that it should have permanent and beautiful grounds; that its buildings should be substantial and ornamental; and that a permanent display of the state's resources, its minerals, its grains, its grasses, its birds, its animals, its arts, its literature, its every resource and development, should be on permanent exhibition, for the inspection of strangers and for the inspiration of its own people. If these two projects could be combined, and I see no reason why they couldn't or shouldn't, Kansas could lead the procession in this matter, as it has led it in so many other respects, and I submit these thoughts and suggestions to the careful consideration of the enterprising and progressive people of the state, and especially to you, their representatives." A fair held on lines pointed out by the governor would do much to advertise the state and its resources. Kansas is large enough and has products enough to make a fair wea worth going a long distance to attend if the proper interest was taken by the people of the state in the matter 6f displays. The fairs of a few years ago contained large stock and grain exhibits but a complete display of Kansas products would saow in addition to these, mining and manufact The Smoke House NEAL STEVENS, Props.
