Certain, so long and favorably known in connection with the Pioneer Marble Works, met with quite a severe accident on last Saturday evening. Mr. Certain had recently connected himself in the employ of Jno. J. Plant, Lightning Bod dealers of this city, and had started lor Independence from Elk City.

When about a mile this side of Elk City, and becoming somewhat chilled by the cold, thought. to leap from the wagon and take exercise while the team was walking slow, but as he sprang from the wagon his foot caught in the lines in such a way as to throw his leg into the wheel, breaking both bones just above the ankle joint. Mr Plant was with him and assisted him to get back upon the wagou again, when he was conveyed to his home. Dr. R.

B. Southard, of Elk City, set the broken limb and Mr. Certain is now doing as well as could be expected under the circumstances. Mr. Certain is one of the promising young men of our county, and has hosts of friends, both in this city and out of it who will be pained to hear of his accident, and whose hearty sympathy and well wishes for his speedy recovery he will have during the weeks he must be confined to his room on account of it.

Bates. The National Greenback State Committee of Maine had a meeting last week, when the question of uniting with the Democrats on a State ticket was brought up and discussed. It was finally voted to put in the field a straight ticket and run it. No coalition in Maine. A Washington special to the New York Herald says a report, founded on good authority is to the effect that the Greenbaekers in Washington are plauning to raise a campaign fund to defray the expenses of a vigorous canvass of the west and south in favor of their doctrines, and that they are endeavoring to secure the services of prominent men as speakers.
