T. PRICE, 42yl 17 IVliliani Street, New York. who happen In town for a season. Many and valuable are the compliments that fall from the lips of those who In their ourneylng from plaeo to place have had ample opportunity to obsevre the condi tion of trade and the relative enterprise of merchants, and the "verdict" is invariably and highly complimentary to the enter prise of our merchants and the condition of trade in our city. We mean to keep these facts before the people, so that there can be nt) doubts in tho minds of any as to where the big stocks of goods, and, almost a necessary consequence, the best bar gains hi making purchases, may be found.

We Invite the attention of the people of Cloud and surrounding counties this week to a few remarks with reference our Cheap Cash Store" and Its gentlemanly young proprietor, II. M. Spalding. Mr. S.

came to Concordia, we belieye, In the spring of 1872, and made his first acquaintance with our citizens as clerk to his broth er-in-law, the lamented Mr. Lockwood, In this capacity ho won the respect and regard of all. Succeeding by purchase to the stock and business of Mr. he lias argely retained tho original custom and added many staunch friends to the list of purchasers at the "Cheap Cash The requirements of his increasing business early obliged him to enlarge his store room, and now he has a large, neat and attractive establishment, a flue stock of new and seasonable goods, and a promis ing future. Spalding Is a careful buyer, and we think you will not miss it if you will when in need of any article In the Dry Goods, Furnishing, Glass and Crockery ware, or Boot and Shoe lines, call and examine his stock.

Ladles' and children's shoes he makes a specialty. His stock of Groceries is large, and more on the way. We have neither time nor space for enumeration, and will only add, Don't forget to call at Spalding's when you come to town for 'shopping" purposes. J. Foster Jewelry.

Mitchell, of Lawrence town ship, was in town last Friday "celebrating' his approaching departure for Oregon. He Indulged' freely in be joy 1 until he was just fit to be tossed bodi ly into a wagon by three or four of his fellow-citizens, and "toted" off to his camp; which he left on Saturday for the far West. Shall we mourn his early "taking Guess not.

One of the notable things of this year has been the rush of emigration from the East to California and Oregon, and the subsequent rush of thousands of disappointed nes back again to the East. By 'the East" we mean almost every state east of the territories, and none seem more craiy to go and Investigate the glittering uncer tainties of that far-oft laud, even at a sacrifice of their worldly all. than the poor farmers and laborers of the slates west of the Mississippi. Many have tried the experiment, and seen the "elephant," only to be obliged to remain there, "strapped" and beggared; while others have gone, to become disappointed and disgusted; to warn their friends and acquaintances In "the States" by letters to remain where they are if they know when they are well off unless they have plenty of cash and eventually to retorn, satisfied to settle and stay whtre they formerly resided All Is certainly not gold that glitters, and we hepe these lessons will not be longer thrown away upon the farmers of Cloud county, many of whom are even now laboring under the erroneous impression that if they can only reach California or Oregon, though their fortune I assured. These gentlemen are proprietors of the finest water power on the Solomon River, and of a grist mill that has been running since last October and that Is doing excellent work and making a fine reputation. They hayealso a woolen mill in contemplation that will undoubted lyere long be an established fact. We congratulate these gentlemen upon their brilliant prospects. The latest swindle was that perpetrated in town the other day. A load of wood was brought in from "out West" some where In a double-boxed wagon.

It looked like good wood, and to the careless eye was rather an attractive load of fuel. But somebody had looked into the bottom of the wagon from below and found that the owner bad laid in a false bottom, which was elevated about eight inches from the wagon bottom. The mean, shameless trick was Inspected by a number ot our citizens, and the young man in charge of the load gave the name of the owner, as that of a man well known In town. Perhaps he thought Iris wood needed little, ventilation, not thinking, that he needed a little of that sort of thing him self. But we refrain for the present, though he's "spotted." Fred.
